Jen’s Kitchen Sink Juice!

Fresh juice! I love to make it once a week! Turmeric is supposed to be lovely for joints, pineapple for inflammation, and celery for skin. Are they, though?! Since we’re not eating them in a vacuum, and have lots of other things going on in our lives, who knows?! I’m sure your mileage may vary, but when someone complains about an elbow or knee, they ask me to make turmeric juice and it stops. Either way, getting lots of extra produce in our diets is always a great idea.

I make a lot of juice hoping for three day’s worth. With two teenagers who want lovely skin in the house, it rarely makes it past two days.

I change the amounts of things depending on my mood. Citrus is the only caution. You can drop several oranges in if you like, but I wouldn’t include the peel from more than one. A little is lovely, but too much tries to do a hostile takeover of your flavor and makes it bitter. I tend to do mostly vegetables for a healthier juice, but a little fruit for natural sweetness balances it so nicely. Yes! Leave out anything that isn’t your jam!

If you had a little helper bring in the groceries or put them away and they accidentally dropped and bruised a lot of it, this is a great way to use those items. Your juicer doesn’t care if your produce is ugly.

Veggies
Spinach or kale
(great spot to use up the hard stems from greens!)
Carrots (Just the stem end off)
Celery
Cucumber
(Peel if it’s a traditional cuke. Leave it if it’s English.)
Beets (Stem end off and quartered to make it easier for your machine)
Sweet bell pepper (Stemmed)

Fruit
Pineapple
(Stemmed, peeled and cored)
Apples
Oranges
(no more than one peel)

Flavor
Turmeric
Jalapeno
Ginger

The anatomy of a juicer. They’re actually pretty straightforward. There’s a feed tube that you stick your produce through and the juice comes out of a spout on one end and the remaining pulp comes out another.

What do you do with the pulp? Some people make crackers with it. My husband loves gardening, so I hand it to him and he uses it in our compost to feed the yard. ♫ “It’s the circle of produce.” ♫

For most machines, all of the parts go in the wash machine with the exception of the pusher, which gets hand washed. I find that the little spinning grinding wheel does better with a light brushing before it goes in the wash machine.

Breville. This is my dream juicer. It’s multi-speed and really powerful. There’s a manual that tells you what speed to use for what, but most of what I’m juicing is on the highest power. It has a big feed, a large pitcher that you can actually store the juice in, and the pulp receptable is behind it, freeing up more side-to-side counter space.

Knives

My favorite knife. It’s a 7″ full tang Santoku. Full tang just means that the blade runs the full length of the knife. The blade and handle aren’t two separate components, so there’s no breaking point. I had a non-tang once and the handle and blade separated. It’s Wusthof, so I contacted the company and they asked me to send it to them and they sent a replacement. They are a great company! But, might as well get the best knife the first time if you can. I chose the Ikon handle design, which is wonderfully ergonomic. I have spent hours on a produce sculpture before and my hand was just as comfy at the end. It’s worth the pennies. There are a few tasks I don’t use it for. I pull out my regular heavy chef’s knife for really hard things like butternut squash, sweet potatoes, and for garlic clove wapping.
